Harry Martens

Name: Harry Martens
Employer: Keepmoat Homes
Apprenticeship: Quantity Surveying
Year: Year 3, on a 5-year course
Why did you want/ choose to study an apprenticeship?
The apprenticeship route was something I always wanted to do. Learning on the job instead of in the classroom has always appealed to me.
How have Keepmoat supported you throughout your studies?
I go to University one day a week on day release where I am studying for my degree in Quantity Surveying and being able to have the support of my team in work to help with any assignments is very useful. My managers also look for ways I can develop and become a better quantity surveyor.
What are the positives of being an apprentice?
Some positives I take away from this apprenticeship is learning the job first-hand and gaining more work experience. Both should help me become better qualified once I finish my course.
What opportunities has an apprenticeship brought you?
I have gained many opportunities being an apprentice. I have been able to travel to many different sites in the North West and see first-hand how the foundations are laid and how a house is built. Also, being able to speak to, and work with, other teams in the office such as the architects or engineers and understand a bit more about their job is very beneficial.
Any advice for anyone wanting to complete an apprenticeship?
I would recommend it completely and suggest that if you become an apprentice take as much in as you can by asking questions and always wanting to learn new information.
What do your friends and family think about your career choice?
My friends and family think I have made a good choice and think it is a great opportunity for me to develop.
Are you happy with the balance of work and study?
Yes, although it does sometimes become challenging with deadlines at Uni, as mentioned before my colleagues always like to help and guide me in the right direction if I’m struggling.
