We’re proud to see 5 West Lancashire-based businesses featured in this year’s Lancashire Business View Hot 100 list, including two new entries to the list with one of those making the top 3!
The Hot 100 list is an annual list of the Lancashire’s 100 most profitable SMEs and this year’s list celebrates the businesses which have risen to the challenge of the pandemic, volatile price rises and Brexit to deliver for the local economy once again.
The West Lancashire-based businesses (4 from Skelmersdale, 1 from Ormskirk) featured in the Top 100 list have a combined turnover of £97,780.00 and employ more than 750 people.

#3 – Conexus Medstaff (New Entry)
Skelmersdale-based Conexus Medstaff is a family firm which specialises in recruiting and placing international nurses into hospitals in the USA.
Like many firms, the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on Conexus Medstaff with many elective surgeries cancelled and the immigration process being delayed throughout. However, as a result of continuing pandemic, an unprecedented demand for nurses was needed, not only through increased patient numbers but also due to the additional staff required to cover those who needed to isolate or faced mental burnout and trauma. While the effects of COVID-19 subside, Conexus predicts strong demand for nursing to continue due to county’s ageing population.
#19 – Hills Salvage & Recycling (2021 #21)
Hills Salvage & Recycling is a Skelmersdale-based vehicle salvage and recycling company which buys, collects, dismantles and sells on motor salvage from insurance companies, recycling a minimum of 95% of each vehicle. In the last year, the company opened a new 90,000 sq ft warehouse and distribution centre and the firm has recently been acquired by Copart UK (Copart) for an undisclosed sum.
24 – Aqua Fabrications (2021 #19)
Aqua Fabrications, another business based in Skelmersdale, have been leading the way in product innovation for the UK rail sector and are suppliers of a comprehensive range of drainage systems, working particularly close with Network Rail. The Aqua group also includes, Aqua Geocomposites, which manufactures the geomembranes and geotextiles for integrated drainage systems and Aqua S&TS, which supplies plastic products for the industrial, agricultural and civil engineering industries.
#60 – C-Tec Skelmersdale (2021 #75)
C-TEC designs and manufactures a wide range of innovate security equipment, which it exports to more than 70 countries around the world. The company operates its own research and development facility and once again invested £1.9m in developing, refining and introducing new products over the last year.
#98 – Firwood Timber & Plywood Co (New Entry)
Firwood Timber & Plywood Co is a family-owned business launched in 1975 to import timber from around the world. The company later opened a builders merchant and now operates 11 sites across the North West as well as offering daily deliveries to customers in the civil and construction sectors across the UK.
