Skelmersdale Ambassador, Peel Ports £540 million investment in becoming the fastest growing UK container terminal is a leading gateway to global markets.
With shipping giants Maersk and MSC revealing they were switching the TA4, and more recently the TA2 transatlantic container route, from Felixstowe to Liverpool the latest £140m investment by Peel Ports to install 10 new cranes at the facility, should result in a fifth of the containers arriving at UK ports being unloaded on the Mersey by 2025.
From December 2020, these additional services will begin arriving into the Liverpool 2 deep water terminal, which is able to handle 95% of the worlds biggest containers. This increased container traffic into Liverpool is a real benefit to Skelmersdale’s businesses given the close proximity to the Port of Liverpool, with the potential to increased opportunities, especially within the logistics sector.
Whilst the timing appears perfect, Peel Ports could not have known when planning this several years ago that the UK electorate would vote to leave the European Union. However the prospect of new post-Brexit free trade agreements with the US and Europe offers huge potential for both The Port of Liverpool, and companies with strong networks to, the UK’s main western-facing port.

As a gateway to the North and Scotland the Port eliminates up to 200 miles of road or rail transport per container journey. Providing the quickest and cheapest route to major markets and is the best connected container terminal in the country. With Skelmersdale situated on one of the arterial motorways from Liverpool it’s a great place to do business.
